Ok, so this is my parent's 2001 Grand Cherokee that I'm borrowing while my car is getting detailed. Anyway, it has the 4.7 L V8 and an interesting problem arose while the car rested for a couple months (it's my Mother's winter driver). The hose highlighted in yellow comes from the air intake and plugs into another hose toward the back of the engine bay. This hose seems to be detached from the hose in the back and will freely move if touched.

This seems to be some sort of vacuum line *I believe* and before I put it back where it belongs, the car would start but immediately die. I had to hold the revs up to keep it running, all the while it seemed to whine.

Anyway, do any of you know what this hose is, how difficult it would be to fix, or if this is a bigger problem than I feel that it is.

Thanks again for your future input!

And for your viewing pleasure...a picture of how I had to keep the hood up to look at the hose...yes, it's a promotional baseball bat from an Indians game. No, not the Cleveland Indians, the Indianapolis Indians.

Judging by what you described it seems like it would have been a vacuum leak. When I seafoamed my cars engine, I had to disconnect the brake booster vacuum line, and that would make the car idle funny, so I think it's conceivable that a large vacuum leak could cause the car to stall out. If you disconnect it and start the car and put your finger over the house do you feel vacuum?

Looks like the car has been sitting for a long time..

*Judging from the engine.

It's likely a crankcase breather hose related to the PCV system. Vacuum hoses are rarely that large in diameter and are made of reinforced tubing.

Yeah a few months each year for the past 2 it would sit while my mom drives her charger during the warmer months.

It has some pick up though...wow. This thing hauls when it wants to.

The brakes on the other hand could use some attention.

Any advice on a crankcase breather hose?

Pull the air box and resonator; it'll be much easier to get to. It might be from the PCV, though I could be wrong. For kicks, you could try to follow the line and see if it snakes to the PCV valve located at the oil fill tube .

BTW, I stand corrected, apparently the 4.7L has both Crankcase Vent Valve (CVV) in addition to a PCV system...

Doodon2whls called it - PCV rubber hose for the CCV system.

How is the 4.7? I always considered them the rather unreliable, kinda shitty, middle child between the 5.2 and the 5.7.

Honestly, this thing has never left us stranded or left us questioning it. To be completely honest, it's never even needed any shop work beyond normal maintenance. This thing has been one of the best cars my family has ever owned. We love the car and the pick-up is amazing. The 4.7 L was the largest they offered at the time and although it's not the fabled inline 4.0 L, it's been nothing but amazing to us.
